Mortise Door Handles Explained: A Buyer's Guide for Indian Homes
If you are building or renovating, the door handle is one of the few things in the house you will touch every single day. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong, because the word “handle” covers several very different pieces of hardware. This guide explains the mortise handle set, the type most Indian homes use on bedroom and main doors, and what to check before you order.
What is a mortise door handle?
A mortise handle set is three parts that work together:
- The lever handles, one on each side of the door, each mounted on a rose (the plate against the door).
- The lock body, a metal case that sits inside a pocket (the “mortise”) cut into the edge of the door. It holds the latch that keeps the door shut and the bolt that locks it.
- The cylinder, the part your key goes into.
Because the lock lives inside the door, a mortise set gives you a clean front with just a lever and a small key escutcheon. Every Aurelio mortise door handle is sold as a complete set with the lock body and cylinder included, so you are not left sourcing a lock separately.
Mortise handle or pull handle?
The two are often confused, so here is the simple rule:
- Choose a mortise handle when the door needs to latch shut and lock with a key: bedrooms, the main door, a study or a store room.
- Choose a pull handle when you only need something to grip: sliding and pivot doors, wardrobe-height shutters, or a main door that already has a separate lock.
Many homes use both. A pull handle on the main door paired with a mortise set from the same design family on the bedroom doors keeps the whole house consistent.
Five things to check before you order
1. Door thickness
Measure the thickness of the door leaf with a tape at the edge where the lock will go. Mention it when you order or message us, so we can confirm the set suits your door.
2. New door or replacement
On a new door, your carpenter cuts the mortise pocket to suit the lock body. On an existing door, check whether there is already a pocket and note its size, because a different lock body may need the pocket enlarged or filled.
3. Which doors need a key
Walk through the plan and list every door: which ones need a key lock and which only need to latch. This tells you how many mortise sets you need and where a pull handle would do.
4. The finish, room by room
Aurelio door hardware comes in four finishes: Tobacco, Matt Black, Antique Brass and Satin Brass. Decide whether you want one finish through the whole house or a different one for the main door. Our guide to choosing a finish goes through each one.
5. What else should match
Door handles rarely live alone. Wardrobe shutters, kitchen drawers and the main door pull all sit in the same sightline. Each Aurelio design (Senso, Forma, Luce, Forte and Pietra) comes as a mortise handle, a door pull handle, a cabinet handle and a cabinet T-knob, in the same four finishes, so you can carry one design from the main door to the last drawer.
Installation
Fitting a mortise lock is carpentry work: the pocket has to be cut cleanly and square so the latch lines up with the strike plate on the frame. Have a carpenter you trust fit it, and keep the keys and fixing screws together until every door is done.
Not sure yet? Hold one first
Finish and weight are hard to judge on a screen. The Aurelio sample kit contains a full production mortise handle, the product catalogue and all four finish palettes, so you can try it against your doors before you order for the whole house.
