Tobacco, Matt Black, Antique Brass or Satin Brass? How to Choose a Door Handle Finish
Once you have picked a handle design, the finish decides how it actually looks in your home. The same lever can feel warm and traditional in one finish and sharp and modern in another. Aurelio door, wardrobe and cabinet hardware comes in four finishes. Here is how to choose between them.
The four finishes at a glance
Tobacco
A smoked, warm brown with a soft sheen. It reads as darker than brass but warmer than black, which makes it a good choice if you like the calm of black hardware but find it too stark against wood.
Works well with: walnut and teak veneers, warm greys, terracotta and earthy palettes.
Matt Black
Graphic and quiet, with a glare-free surface. Black hardware gives a crisp outline on light doors and almost disappears on dark ones.
Works well with: white and off-white doors, light oak, concrete and minimal interiors, black window frames.
Antique Brass
A deep, traditional metallic tone with more brown in it than a bright gold. It suits homes that want warmth and a sense of age.
Works well with: dark wood, cane and rattan, heritage-style and classic Indian interiors.
Satin Brass
A warm, brushed gold. It is the brightest of the four and the most noticeable on a door, so it works best when you want the hardware to be a detail people see.
Works well with: dark laminates and veneers where it stands out, cream and beige walls, marble and brass light fittings.
Antique Brass vs Satin Brass
These two are the ones people find hardest to choose between. In a photograph they can look close; in the hand they are clearly different. Satin Brass is lighter and more golden, Antique Brass is deeper and browner. If you are deciding between them, see both in daylight against your actual door before ordering. That is exactly what the sample kit is for: it includes all four finish palettes.
How to mix finishes in one home
- Keep one finish per room. The door handle, wardrobe handles and switch plates in a single room look best when they agree.
- Let the main door be different. A bolder finish on the main door, such as Satin Brass, with a quieter one inside, such as Tobacco or Matt Black, is a common and good-looking choice.
- Match the bathroom to its door. Aurelio bathroom accessories come in Brushed Gold PVD and Matt Black. Brushed Gold pairs naturally with brass door hardware, and Matt Black with Matt Black.
- Check your other metals. Taps, light fittings and curtain rods are part of the picture. Pick a finish that sits comfortably beside them, or deliberately contrasts.
Screens are not reliable
Every phone and laptop shows colour slightly differently, and indoor lighting changes how a metal finish looks through the day. Use photos to shortlist, then confirm in person. If you cannot visit us, the sample kit brings the four finishes to you, or you can send us a photo of your door on WhatsApp and ask what we would suggest.
Looking after the finish
No harsh chemicals or abrasive metal polishes are needed. Wipe the hardware with a soft microfibre cloth dampened with water, and dry it. Avoid acidic cleaners, bleach and scouring pads, which can damage any surface finish.
